Scan Ready Digital Sets and Trays Enable UDI Compliance and Prevent Inventory Divergence for Device Companies

Summate’s SPD Module enables one step capture of all restock implants including documenting full UDI information to the tray

Over and above all the cost, inventory management, and patient safety gains Summate Scan Ready™ digital sets and trays enable, the final benefit is regulatory compliance.

A little story:  when I was working in the field as a device rep, my company had a recall of 4mm neuro screws.  I had to go to EVERY account, open EVERY tray, and remove EVERY screw from my entire territory.  It was not only incredibly time consuming, but VERY costly.  The time it took me to travel to 3 states and remove ALL the screws also compromised patient safety.

The Summate software tracks implant UDI to sets and trays at restock with group label imaging of implant labels at the tray restock stage.  Simply lay out the implants in their packages, image the entire lot, and the full UDI is traced to the specific tray, and fulfillment of used implants is documented.  All in one easy step.

With current manual and non-digital maintenance of orthopedic implant sets and trays, a recall is a nightmare.  With no record of which implants went into which trays, the ENTIRE set and tray inventory must be removed.    Imagine identifying which trays received recalled implants with keystrokes and targeting those trays for implant removal, saving incredible amounts to time and money, and increasing patient safety.  It is a no brainer.

Finally, scanning restock UDI to field sets and trays prevents inventory diversion, which is a huge problem for device OEMs. The Summate software confirms with the OEM that the restock inventory shipped was used to replace the inventory used from the set/tray.

The orthopedic industry can do better.  It’s time for Scan Ready digital sets and trays.  It’s time for the Ortho industry to put Scan in the Plan with Summate Technologies.
